How is effective nuclear charge related to the electron affinity of oxygen and fluorine?
Q. (more than one answer is possible) The fluorine has a larger effective nuclear charge than oxygen. The electron affinity becomes more exothermic (negative) as the effective nuclear charge increases. The electron affinity becomes more endothermic (positive) as the effective nuclear charge increases. The fluorine has a less exothermic electron affinity than oxygen. The fluorine has a more exothermic electron affinity than oxygen.

Is the ionization energy/electron of affinity the same for both H and H2?
Q. I'm working on a chem lab report and I need to listt the ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativies of various elements (Cu, Zn, H2, etc). In my text book, we have a periodic table labeled with all of those values for each element. I was just wondering if they would be the same for H2 and H?
Asked by Ashley L - Tue Oct 30 17:15:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you are asked to find the ionization energy and electron affinity for elements, it refers to the energies corresponding to the individual gaseous atoms. So H ---> H+ + e- is the hydrogen ionization process, not H2 ---> H2+ + e-. And similarly for electron affinity: H2 + e- ---> H2- is the right process, H + e- ---> H- is the right one. Similarly, for metals we are referring again to the vapour - the amount of energy required to eject an electron from the surface of the SOLID metal is not called the ionization energy, but the work function. There are electron affinities and ionization energies for molecules too, but here H2 is referred to as dihydrogen to avoid ambiguity. And for H and H2 they are NOT the same.

What pickups should I get for my Squire Affinity Strat?
Q. I want to improve my Squire affinity strat, but I don't know how. I am wondering what would sound best. Thanks for any help!
Asked by Steph - Thu May 14 11:46:36 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since it's a guitar with single coil pickups, you should get single coil sized pickups that sound great, i have these and they are my personal favorite, and you can get them for around $75, get Seymour Duncan Cool Rails, or Hot Rails, or if not just check out your local music store more mor eoptions from Seymour duncan. Hope this helps

A. it should fit since squire is just a branch of fender. i don't know for sure, but it seems right for it to fit since they are basically the same.

what does the expression "biphasic" mean when discribing the affinity of a ligand to an enzyme?
Q. I have a report that describes the affinity between the enzyme i am intrested in and one its ligands as "biphasic" then a fullstop without ant explanation of the term. What does the term mean and what does it imply?
Asked by Ahmed S - Thu Jan 25 19:20:48 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Biphasic here likely means that there are two kinds of interactions between the ligand and the enzyme. One of them would be hydrophobic (look for a hydrocarbon portion of the ligand) or pi-stacking (aromatic rings). The other would be hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, or salt bridges (O-H bonds, N-H bonds, charged portions of the ligand). If you find them both, then that is what biphasic means here. If not, find a friendly biochemist and ask for an explaination.

A. Propensity means "inclination towards" or "leaning towards" Example: He had a propensity to voice his opinion. Meaning: He has a tendency or inclination to speak his mind. Affinity means has a preference towards (given one or more choices). She has an affinity for eating apples instead of oranges.

A. Get some Hot Rails, they are humbuckers in a single coil sized package. I would recommend just getting one for your bridge position. It's very likely that you will be paying about the same $$ for your new pickup as you did for the guitar though.

A. Loyalty (Affinity) program Marketing program designed to enhance brand loyalty by cultivating an ongoing relationship between a marketer and his customer. Successful loyalty programs encourage the consumer to buy frequently, to increase the amount spent each time, and to concentrate all or most of their related purchases on that brand. Most loyalty programs offer perks for membership in a club or program and reward purchases - behavior that is potentially of benefit to the firm. In marketing generally and in retailing more specifically, a loyalty card, rewards card, points card, or club card is a plastic or paper card, visually similar to a credit card or debit card, that identifies the card holder as a member in a loyalty program.

Q. What is meant by the term 'agonist affinity'? Why is it not equivalent to EC50?
Asked by HOTP - Thu Apr 3 19:38:36 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An agonist is anything that binds to a receptor and stimulates a response. Affinity describes how strong the binding is. EC50 is the concentration of agonist/drug that results in 50% of the maximal effect. EC50 is a measure of the potency of the drug. Potency and affinity are related but not equivalent. You can not have a drug that is both highly potent and has weak affinity...

How much can I sell a fender squire affinity for?
Q. I've had it for about 3-4 years, it's in great condition with a guitar case and all the leads. How much do you think it would be worth? Thanks Russell E, I'm planning on getting an ibanez, not a big fan of fender guitars but I've had this guitar for ages and wanted to sell it for something better. The only thing it's a soft-case not a hard-case.
Asked by The Dude Minds - Tue Oct 7 21:39:00 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The guitar itself sells new for $150. A Hardshell case for a strat is about $85. I'd take $50 off the guitar, and add $50 for the used case. So I'd think a reasonable asking price would be about $150. The Affiinity is not a bad guitar. Not the best, but it's a good cheap guitar. But like the other guy said I don't think the resale value would be all that high, although I think he's lowballing it a bit. A Squier Bullet strat is worth about what he said, but The Affinity is a better guitar than that.

A. Think of them as opposites! Affinity is basically the energy gained when an atom attracts an electron during a chemical bond. Electronegativity is the energy required to remove an electron during a chemical bond.

Explain why the electron affinity of carbon is greater than that of nitrogen?
Q. Based on the actual electron configurations of the elements, explain why the electron affinity of carbon is greater than that of nitrogen.
Asked by justanordinaryday08 - Thu Sep 28 17:48:46 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. C - 1s2 2s2 2p2 N - 1s2 2s2 2p3 Based on the Aufbau principle, the electrons in the 2p orbitals are placed in separate orbitals and are not paired up until necessary. In the case of nitrogen, this means that all of the p orbitals have one electron in them, and to add another electron to the system, it must either be paired up with another electron in one of the 2p orbitals, or go into a higher energy orbital. Either of these costs more energy that would be the case for carbon, which has an empty p orbital, and electron affinity is the measure of how much energy is gained by adding an extra electron.

What is the difference between the second ionization energy and the second electron affinity of an element?
Q. Do these two things differ for all the elements in the same way or differently?
Asked by Sirakyn - Wed Jan 30 08:59:51 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. second ionisation energy: energy required to "pull away" one electrons from a +1 cation, e.g., Na+ --> (Na2+) + (e-), or F+ --> (F2+) + e- second electron affinity: energy require to "push" one electron into a -1 anion, e.g., (Na-) + (e-) --> (Na2-), or F- + (e-) --> (F2-) i think their differences are obvious enough. but both of them are always positive for all elements, 'coz the former one: pulling a negative charge away from a positive charge, and the latter one: pushing a negative charge close to a negative charge, energy are require to "fight against" the electrostatic force.

is marriage to a relative by affinity legal in the us?
Q. my fiance is my sister's brother-in-law, which means that technically, we are relatives by affinity. and we plan to get married in december in california. my question is will our marriage be valid? or is there any us federal law that forbids that? thanks for your answers.

A. Federal law doesn't govern who can or cannot get married. State law determines that. And since the two of you are not related by blood, there should be no problem.
